iPhone 17 Dual Capture vs a dual camera app

With the iPhone 17, Apple added Dual Capture to the Camera app — record the front and back cameras together, no app required. So is there still a reason to install one? Here is an honest look at what each does well.

When Apple's Dual Capture is the right choice

If you have an iPhone 17 and you want a quick reaction clip with no fuss, use it. It is already there, it is one tap from the Camera app, and it records up to 4K — genuinely better resolution than most dual-camera apps, which top out at 1080p. For a straightforward picture-in-picture video, that is hard to beat.

When an app is still the better tool

You do not have an iPhone 17

This is the big one. Dual Capture is limited to the iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air. Every iPhone from the XS onwards has the hardware to record both cameras at once — Apple simply does not expose it in the Camera app on those models. An app does.

You want a layout other than picture-in-picture

Apple gives you one layout. For interviews, tutorials, and anything where both views matter equally, split-screen is a much better frame — and being able to drag the divider lets you weight one side over the other.

You want to control your background

Dual Capture shows whatever is behind you. An app can cut you out of the small window so only you appear over the main camera, or in single-camera mode replace your background entirely with a blur, a colour, or a photo of your own.

You want the shot to look finished as it is recorded

Filters, skin smoothing, a styled picture-in-picture window, and clip recording that lets you drop a bad take all mean less editing afterwards.

The honest summary

If you own an iPhone 17 and only need simple picture-in-picture at the highest quality, Apple's built-in Dual Capture is excellent and free. If you have any other iPhone from the XS onwards, or you want split-screen, background replacement, beauty or filters, a dedicated app is still the more capable tool — and there is no reason not to have both.
